What is Autoresponder Software ?
An autoresponder is a computer program (or software) that automatically answers e-mails sent to it. Autoresponder software can be broken down into two main groups.
- Locally hosted- This is where the software is installed on a web server and accessed via a web browser. These are written in scripted languages eg. ASP, PHP, Pearl. This is the most technically demanding option, basic knowledge of scripted language is a plus. Some companies offer free installation and tutorials making this process alot easier. The big benefit here is the amount of control and customization you have over your software, emails and broadcasts. There is generally no size limit in regards to your list or the amount of messages sent. I rate Sendstudio the best for this option.
- Desktop hosted- As can imagine the next option installed directly onto your computer (often by Internet download). This option is easier to install and manage. It also come with many customization options and features. The main benefit being that you can work on your messages offline. The big draw back is the need for a good ISP (Internet service provider) as a large list or many messages needing to be sent can cause a problem with ISP limits or connection speed. If you have a good Internet connection and ISP then Mailloop is the winner for you.
OK so thats the two main groups but dont forget your other option
- Remotely hosted- Most people consider this an autoresponder service rather than software but at the end of the day it is just someone elses software that you are accessing to run your autoresponder. I included this because this option is the easiest of all and has many benefits. Fisrt of all the do all the work for you. They maintain and update the software and send the messages. All you have to do is create the opt-in and the messages (broadcasts are a good idea too) and then play some golf (insert favourite past time here). It really is that simple just wind it up and let it go. All I do now is check my stats and try to tweak my messages to get a few more sales. I like remotley hosted services and I use Getresponse.
Other options
There is a ton of good autoresponder software out there and people with diffenent needs will naturally have different likes and dislikes. I recommend this site if you want a good side by side comparison with something to suit all budgets, list sizes and hosting preferences. Autoresponder Reviews.
